Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique [20th Anniversary Edition]

Beastie Boys
Paul's Boutique [20th Anniversary Edition]
Capitol Records [1989; re: 2009]

Fire Drills Review:

I don't think anyone ever saw Paul's Boutique coming back when it dropped in 1989. The commercial breakthrough of the Beastie Boys debut Licensed To Ill [1986] almost certainly had the Boys pegged as one hit album artists but Boutique changed all of those notions. The beauty of this classic Hip-Hop record is that acceptance was not immediate. It is a dense record with great substance but when dissected and listened to repeatedly, it is clear the Beastie Boys were on top of their game. The 20th Anniversary does not have any extra tracks, which is a little disappointing but it does separate out the original 12 minute closer "B-Boy Bouillabaiss" into its nine separate segments plus the remastering sounds great, so no matter what you can't go wrong with this reissued upgrade!

Key Track: "Hey Ladies"

Band With Similar Fire: Run-D.M.C.
