Fire Note Says: An enjoyable debut that breathes freedom!
Album Review:
Electric Owls is the new project of The Comas frontman Andy Herod. It is a record of self healing, re-location, and the rediscovery of music, which makes Ain't Too Bright a debut with all the right elements for success. After finishing his last tour with The Comas, Herod needed a break from being in a band, New York and music in general. The solve for his situation was to move back to his familiar home of North Carolina and just relax with friends and family. Part of Herod's healing process came from simply reintroducing himself to music that he connected with. This synergy recharged his musical battery and brought out his singing and playing for hours a day until the songs for Electric Owls came about in a 3-4 week period. Herod self-produced the album and reunited with The Comas’ Jason Caperton on guitar plus brought in Matt Gentling (Band of Horses, Archers of Loaf) on bass and Cully Symington (Gutter Twins) on drums. He also grabbed a bunch of local musicians straight off the streets of Asheville. Ain't Too Bright offers a bunch of different styles mixed with Herod's soft delivery style that includes synths in some places, prog-rock in others, while even bringing in the southern twang on "Haint In The Holler". With the future status of The Comas unknown, Electric Owls is a full fledged band that has Herod's new found attention and Ain't Too Bright presents solid promise for more good things to come!
