Pearl Jam: Backspacer

Pearl Jam
Backspacer
Monkeywrench Records [2009]

Fire Note Says:
Relaxed Pearl Jam make solid and fun record!

Album Review:
Sometimes when you are dealing with a career band like Pearl Jam and compare new material to their rock radio staples of the past, it gets extremely hard to embrace a record like Backspacer. Most of this anxiety comes from different places but I encourage you to put those great memories in a box and just let Backspacer's 35 minutes roll. The record is probably one of the most laid back records the band has ever released and the usual crazy intense Eddie Vedder actually sounds like he is having a good time. That is why Backspacer succeeds. Not because the record takes the band to a new level. Not because these are the best songs Pearl Jam have ever written. Not because "The Fixer" will replace "Jeremy" on people's all time favorite list. Backspacer succeeds because Pearl Jam have collected eleven songs on their own new Monkeywrench label, that are completely free of criticism, expectations, and simply put - fun to listen too. If you are expecting PJ to change your life here - seek a different record. If you are looking for one of your longtime favorites to entertain you - look no further because Backspacer will fill the void!

Key Tracks: "Get Some", "The Fixer", "The End"
