Fire Note Says: Another stellar record for their catalog!
Album Review:
If there ever was a band that could blend space and music together so gracefully that it put you in awe every time, then it would be Yo La Tengo. It really should not be a surprise that on the groups 12th, 14th or 16th record (depending how you count), that Popular Songs comes off sophisticated, well planned out and has a timeless replay value. Yo La Tengo have always had a knack for taking a simple tune and making something special out of it. That is exactly the type of tracks found on Popular Songs. From the hip stroll along in "If It's True" to the more soft lounge of "I'm On My Way" to the upbeat "Nothing To Hide", Yo La Tengo tackle multiple styles with multiple sounds, while still creating a cohesive album. Popular Songs also would not be a Yo La Tengo record if it did not include some epic tracks and as expected, the last three tracks are 9, 11, and 15 minutes long respectively, creating their own mini album as a closer. This sequencing enhances Popular Songs because by placing these long players at the end, a person can enjoy the pop side of Yo La Tengo out front and then drift off with the band, as the album ebbs its way to a conclusion. You also have the option of hitting stop and saving the drone for later. Regardless on how you want to listen to Popular Songs, Yo La Tengo show off what 25 years in the business can build and also how a veteran band can stay completely relevant!
