The GossipMusic For Men
Columbia Records [2009]

Fire Note Says: Glossy but still catchy in parts.
Album Review:
Music For Men is the Rick Rubin produced major label debut from indie darlings The Gossip. This is a band that has evolved since their Kill Rock Stars days of two minute bluesy garage punk in 2000 to the morphed dance rock you hear today. For longtime fans, these beats may be harder to swallow, but anyone that caught on during their last KRS record Standing In The Way Of Control [2006] will appreciate The Gossip's bigger sound. That record really captured the band finding their niche and also earned them attention, while Music For Men completes this transformation and continues their path towards a larger following. The graduation to a major label has had its influences because this album is really polished compared to their earlier work. Beth Ditto's voice never sounded better as it is the forefront for every track (as it should be), while the music pops and moves keeping the pace on Music For Men fast. Overall, moving to the big leagues has not hindered The Gossip's energy but I believe that for the indie crowd the group still needs to have a little bit more grit to their tracks and be cautious of going too glossy because The Gossip may find themselves without an audience next time out.
