Fire Drill Review:
I must admit that when I heard that Karen O was heading up this soundtrack, I just simply scratched my head. Not that she is not talented but trying to fit her personality with a movie about a kids book still had me pondering. Needless to say, I checked out Karen O And The Kids with caution but was pleasantly surprised with the results. One shining piece of this record is that the "Kids" are made up of a bunch of Karen O's stellar indie friends like Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska), Nick Zinner, (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and an untrained children’s choir. This combination of O's quiet and strong "Maps" voice with the in and out children's choir plus talented musicians, provides an entertaining listen without even seeing the movie. With context, director Spike Jonze knew exactly what he was doing selecting Karen O, as this music shows off her playful side and can succeed on many different levels making it enjoyable for a wide audience!
