Alec Ounsworth: Mo Beauty

Fire Drill Review:
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman Alec Ounsworth showcases the man behind the band here on his debut solo outing, which features a New Orleans backdrop, as it was recorded at the famed Piety St. studio and employed the additional help of some members of the diversely talented New Orleans community. The record has a very laid back and free forming jazz vibe to it, as Ounsworth's vocals jangle along and keep a steady pace. What Ounsworth gains here as the sole focus, is his loose approach to instrumentation as Mo Beauty features almost a kitchen sink amount, as everything from pedal steel, organ, strings and saxophones ignite throughout the entire record. This approach both helps and hinders Mo Beauty as the more concise tracks really highlight Ounswoth's lyrics, while others get lost in the randomness of the music background. This is still a worthy outing to check out as Alec shows what really drives him and probably some insight into what a future Clap You Hands Say Yeah record might sound like.
