Boston Spaceships: Licking Stamps And Drinking Shitty Coffee: Live In Atlanta

Boston Spaceships
Licking Stamps And Drinking Shitty Coffee: Live In Atlanta
Andy Playboy Channel Records [2009]

Fire Drill Review:

This double vinyl only release captures Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships in their true element - on the stage. The records capture 25 selected tracks from the bands show in Atlanta GA on October 17, 2008 and is a limited edition of 500 copies with one LP being orange, while the other LP is black. The recording compares to the quality of most official GBV live recordings and really highlights that Boston Spaceships are Pollard's closest side project to a rock n roll band. In fact, many of the tracks here play faster and harder live with the addition of Tommy Keene and Jason Harducy expanding the normal recording trio for the stage. The Atlanta recording date from which the album was pulled from somewhat drives the tracklist, as a majority of songs are from the groups self-titled debut but still does include several from the early 2009 follow up The Planets Are Blasted. Two of Pollard's other side collaborations get plugged here as well, with tracks by Pscyo And The Birds and The Takeovers, while there are a couple more obscure throwback GBV tunes that exist on the first Box release and Suitcase 1. Lastly his solo outing Robert Pollard Is Off To Business [2008] gets good representation too and then there are two tracks that can only be found on this release. Clearly to get the real experience, you must go see the Spaceships for real, as to capture an entire show would take at least two more LPs, but overall Licking Stamps... serves its purpose and is a great snapshot of how musically sound this band really is from Bob remembering the words to every pounding drum beat that rings through your speakers - not to mention it is just plain fun!

Key Track: "Soggy Beavers"
