Fire Drill Review:
Nothing reminds you of the 80's like Duran Duran and in a good way when it comes to Rio. They were MTV staples and Rio was their grandiose entrance into the US market. It is an album that took a bit to catch on over here, which is why this 2 CD version captures all of the US remixes plus other odds and ends. Are they necessary for everyone to listen to? No, but they do offer an interesting look at how much effort went into launching Duran Duran to the masses, as the US versions pack a bit more punch in the production. Did it work? I guess, but Rio in itself, no matter which version you listen to, holds up today as a solid new wave record that has tons of swagger and forever recognizable tracks.

Hammersmith '82! is actually the more intriguing release because it shows a side of Duran Duran that many probably don't know. It was previously unreleased and it actually captures the band just before they were a mega-success in the US. What comes through is how energetic their live performance is and how not only the Rio hits pop live but how confident they are as performers and how their earlier work even sounds better. Clearly it captures the band at their breakout moment and is an entertaining listen all the way through. The included DVD includes the full concert plus all of those classic Rio music videos, so for all of their legion of faithful fans this release is a must for the collection!
