NOFX: Coaster

NOFX
Coaster
Fat Wreck Chords [2009]

Fire Note Says: Still fun after all these years!

Album Review:
Nothing quite feels like the punk rock NOFX has cranked out over the last 25 years and on their 11th studio record Coaster, you get another dose of select topics that include politics, Iron Maiden and of course - Lesbians. One thing you will notice immediately on Coaster is that the band is musically tight and the songs sound clean, produced and smooth. Fat Mike's vocals are out front and center, while even the harmonies are in tune and never get muffled by the punk rock. This works for the record because a NOFX record without a good understanding of the lyrics is no fun at all. Like in the Iron Maiden breakup song "Eddie, Bruce, and Paul" there are several moments that will just make you smile, from the Bruce Dickinson impersonation to the line "Number of the Beast is in bed with Rob and Judas Priest". First single "Creeping Out Sara" recounts the discussion Fat Mike had with Sara (he thinks) from Teagan & Sara at a music festival as he talked to her about drugs and lesbians - you can probably guess that did not go well but makes a great song! Overall, Coaster is a much lighter record then some of their more politically charged releases and is a short 32 minutes but it still entertains with the little things like the reggae on "Best God In Show" and the trumpet in "I Am An Alcoholic", giving NOFX some new tricks while all the tracks bring what they are best known for - smart ass lyrics!

Other Lives: Other Lives

Other Lives
Other Lives
TBD Records [2009]

Fire Drill Review:
Stillwater, Oklahoma band Other Lives have already been compared to Radiohead, Coldplay and Fleet Foxes with there self-titled debut record. Clearly big shoes to fill but Other Lives are up to the task as the band used to be an instrumental outfit called Kunek. This makes the sweeping and grandiose song structures seem so natural as they add in the solid vocals of frontman Jesse Tabish. It also should be noted that the record was produced by Joey Waronker (Walt Mink, R.E.M., Eels) and engineered by Darrell Thorp (Radiohead) plus it should not be a surprise that TBD records is the same label that released Radiohead's In Rainbows. Other Lives debut is a record that you pick up on a whim and it overtakes you gradually with every precise note and delicately sung lyric. It is a slow burn - but it is a good one!

The Veils: Sun Gangs

The Veils
Sun Gangs
Rough Trade Records [2009]

Fire Drill Review:
I have been a fan of The Veils since their debut The Runaway Found [2004] was released in the UK. The Veils are lead by Finn Andrews (son of XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews) and on their third record Sun Gangs Andrews brings the same solid sonic experience in every one of its ten tracks. The album is full of anguish and loneliness, which makes it incredibly interesting as it has the capability to suck you in and not let go. Don't think for a minute that means each song is a ballad because tracks like "Killed By The Boom" and "Three Sisters" keep the pace moving but they just are not going to be the feel good hits of the summer. Sun Gangs finds the band coming into full stride and showcases Finn Andrews as a songwriter. This is a combo that pushes The Veils into the top echelon of sophisticated, complicated and talented indie UK acts out there right now!

Camera Obscura: My Maudlin Career

Camera Obscura
My Maudlin Career
4AD Records [2009]

Fire Note Says: In this case - more of the same is perfect!

Album Review:
Consistency is always the key and for Scotland's Camera Obscura they follow that advice on their fourth record My Maudlin Career, as it offers up the same top notch quality sounds as their previous records. Fans were worried when they left the indie power label Merge for the major 4AD but those worries will quickly dissipate with the first two tracks of bouncy pop in "French Navy" and "The Sweetest Thing". Sure, the groups sound has expanded with more complex arrangements and a higher end production, which takes away some of that nostalgia found on earlier releases but it brings the groups real talents to the forefront. Each track on My Maudlin Career works independently with the likable soft vocals of Tracyanne Campbell and the feel good vibes they leave, while you could envision each song just playing while you are hanging out with a drink. My Maudlin Career also succeeds with repeat listens because tracks that don't immediately grab you on the first spin start to leave an impression like "Swans" chorus, which Campbell has a draw comparable to Neko Case and the pleading refrain she sings out on "James" that will leave you broken too. Fans of Camera Obscura will embrace My Maudlin Career with open ears but it possesses the key qualities that should bring many new ones to the table such as exposure, repeatability and just plain good songwriting!

Bob Dylan: Together Through Life

Bob Dylan
Together Through Life
Columbia Records [2009]

Fire Drill Review:

I must admit that it is a bit hard to review a 68 year old legend that has released countless records, especially when you want to be critical but end up getting so involved in the music you quickly remember why Dylan is a legend! Together Through Life is a simple 10 songs in 45 minutes that has Dylan cranking out a growler type blues that is not only spirited but just seems like he is enjoying life. Along with this laid back feeling, Dylan's help does not get much better with David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) handling the accordion combined with the guitar playing of Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter co-writing the record. All of these elements, including nostalgia, makes Together Through Life worth checkin' out - if nothing else to hear how a living legend still makes it happen!

"Every Little Bit Hurts" is the debut single from Title Tracks, which is the new project from John Davis (Q And Not U, Georgie James). John writes and records everything but has assembled a live touring band to launch his new brand of high energy power punk that sounds like it will pack an entertaining punch when the album releases later this summer. Based on the two tracks here, Title Tracks debut album has quickly jumped onto our highly anticipated list!

Fire Note Says:
Frank Black + Synths + Wife = Grand Duchy

Album Review:
This album may have snuck up on longtime Pixies fans but I guarantee they will have interest when they find out that Grand Duchy really is the team of Black Francis (Pixies, Frank Black) and his wife Violet Clark. On the duo's debut record Petits Fours they swap lead vocals on the nine tracks, which are wrapped up in synths, guitar and drum beats. The interesting thing about this project is that Violet Clark has vocals comparable to a Kim Deal, which gives Grand Duchy glimpses of what some new Pixie material could of or would have sounded like. Clearly it dives a bit deep into the synthetic noises for a complete forecast but when Black cranks up his signature guitar riffs and Clark speaks in the background one can only dream. Overall, Petits Fours is 9 songs at 37 minutes, which is a perfect length to get acquainted with Grand Duchy but it does not overstay its welcome. This record will please some longtime Black Francis fans and probably will piss the others off because of its lightheartedness. It has a bounce to it that one could only achieve recording with their wife but has the production qualities and rawness of a true Frank Black project. As a fan you just need to decide where you stand - I am standing on the side that would like to hear more!

Westbound Train: Come And Get It

Westbound Train
Come And Get It

Fire Drill Review:

If this record came out twelve years ago Westbound Train would have been huge. The Boston ska band just recently released their second Hellcat record Come And Get It, which is full of solid mid tempo numbers that have all of the classic soul, smooth reggae, upbeat ska and distinctive storytelling you would find in their forefathers catalogs such as The Wailers, or The Specials. Westbound Train accomplishes creating a likable crossover record in Come And Get It with plenty of sing-a-long foot tapping moments that is completed with Dave Hillyard (Slackers, Rocksteady 7) producing, which is good enough to bring attention back to ska for another generation to enjoy!

Fire Drill Review:

This indie power pop group hails from Miami and on their debut record Standby they revive a loud and sharp early nineties vibe, which will probably sound new to many but highlights how rocking this era of music was. Ex Norwegian writes catchy tracks, while putting in a undertone of crunch and a little dash of shoegaze to their overall clean vocals. This makes tracks "Something Unreal", "Add Vice" and "Don't Bother" standout and if played in the right venue could easily get Ex Norwegian some positive exposure.

Super Furry Animals
Dark Days / Light Years

Fire Note Says: SFA prove once again that they know what they are doing!

Album Review:
I can start by saying that I have not taken the Welsh psychedelic group Super Furry Animals ninth album Dark Days/Light Years out of my rotation since landing the review. The record is not so much about what they did different or creatively new, but that SFA are still in peak form and know themselves the best. Why try to change if its not broken? On Dark Days/Light Years it is definitely not broken as the band brings groove song after groove song, that will get your feet tapping faster then you can say go. SFA also still provide enough uniqueness to keep you entertained such as on the bouncy "Inaugural Trams", which has the guest appearance from Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy's who performs a German-language rap that adds a different dynamic to the track, which already has a solid beat. There are plenty of more ambient sounding recordings that longtime fans will adore as they swirl and each pass the six minute mark, starting the record off with "Crazy Naked Girls" hitting the middle "Cardiff In The Sky" and closing with the over 9 minute Welsh/English singing of "Pric". Dark Days/Light Years is not a return to form or a comeback for SFA but highlights a group that constantly refines their sound and proves that they can still write some catchy tunes!

Fire Drill Review:
Female singer/songwriters are probably a dime a dozen but really good ones are hard to find. Let me make it easy for you and tell you that Eilen Jewell is a good one as her third record Sea Of Tears is the proof. Her Dusty Springfield meets Lucinda Williams vocals carry each song to the next likable level as she weaves stories that are intriguing, honest and pure. Sea Of Tears has a very classic country vibe as Jewell's band creates a perfect backdrop with their steel guitars, upright bass and harmonizing vocals. Eilen Jewell is an artist that won't get conventional exposure but she tours 24/7 and her longing vocals are worth every minute you give them!

Fire Drill Review:
If you are like me then you are always looking for something unique in the music world and although you run across new bands you like and may even love - they probably don't fall into the Black Math Horseman category. The band is heavy complete with metal riffs and pounding drums, while their music slides off into the drone genre. What might surprise you is Black Math Horseman has a female lead in Sera Timms, which sounds close to a current PJ Harvey as her vocals help guide the way out. Wyllt was produced by Scott Reeder (Kyuss) and the results are probably not coincidental as the debut has decent length tracks and a killer eleven minute closer, which bundles many styles of rock and really offers up something different to check out!

Tim Easton: Porcupine

Tim Easton
Porcupine
New West Records [2009]

Fire Note Says:
It is about time you get to know Tim Easton!

Album Review:
Right from the beginning of lead off track "Burgundy Wine", Easton gives the launch code of "1-2-3-4" that unleashes his fifth album Porcupine and its rock entrenched roots. Easton of course is known more as a folk/Americana guy but here he plugs in and fully admits that this is a record to play with a band. To get the sound he wanted, Tim went back to Alex The Great and Club Roar studios in Nashville to work with Brad Jones and Robin Eaton who produced his debut album, Special 20 [1998]. To seal the deal on a Midwestern sound, he also recruited a Ohio-based rhythm section with Sam Brown on drums (Gaunt, New Bomb Turks) and Matt Surgeson on bass and backing vocals (Matt also played on Special 20). All this talk about rock is not to say that Easton loses his flare for the twang, as it runs throughout the undertones of Porcupine, only this time its electrified and scorched with blues. For every song that he tears it up with pounding guitar like on "Get What I Got" and the title track, Easton can bring it in with soft storytelling about whisky drinking girls on "Stones Throw Away", offer a bouncy roadtrip song in "Northbound" or deliver a thematic closer like "Goodbye Amsterdam" complete with piano. Porcupine is one of Tim Easton's best work and its multitude of bluesy guitar riffs, rock vibes, and electric folk showcases his witty song writing skills and knack for having a good time through music. This is an album that should put his name up there with the rest of his New West Records brethren, and rightfully so, becasue Porcupine is solid from beginning to end!

The Breeders
Fate To Fatal [EP]
Self-Released [2009]

Fire Drill Review:
I know what you are thinking - maybe this the "Cannonball" Breeders. No it is not, but I must say that the lead off title track has a repetitive Breeders howl that only the Deal sisters could create, which over time gets better as it grooves along. Mark Lanegan lends his vocals to the second track "The Last Time", which is definitely different but a solid slow burner. The most interesting selection here out of the four tracks is the Bob Marley cover of "Chances Are" recorded by Steve Albini. This EP shows that The Breeders are still in music mode and this is especially cool if you have one of the limited hand screened vinyl versions from Record Store Day!

Fire Drill Review:
Call it a supergroup or not but Tinted Windows is Taylor Hanson (Hanson), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne) and Bun Carlos (Cheap Trick). The album is a straight forward power pop record that features Hanson on lead, which does not distract as he has a good voice. You put that with Schlesinger's mad songwriting skills and talented musicians in Iha and Carlos, one would think this couldn't lose. Tinted Windows is not bad but it fails maximum impact because like most supergroups, there is no long term commitment and the cohesion on the record does not reach a maximum. This sparks moments but does not gel for the full 36 minutes.

Record Store Day: Special Coverage

We wanted to take a second and reflect on Record Store Day which was last Saturday April 18, 2009. This was the second annual RSD and it celebrated the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA. It was great to see so many artists contribute special releases that were only sold at these independent record stores making the trip to a real store that much more exciting. Our Fire Note crew was out and about and we decided to feature some of our great finds from the day. Long live the record store!

Pavement
Live in Köln (LP)
Matador Records [2009]
(2500 Copies)

Why is it Cool: This is a simple 10 song set running 36 minute from 1998 that gives a great example of the enthusiasm and energy Pavement used to put out at their shows. Probably one of the more underrated live bands.

Beck / Sonic Youth
Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth
Split 7″
Matador Records [2009]
(2500 Copies each)

Why is it Cool: The first of these two release with Sonic Youth and Beck covering each other is where its at! Sonic Youth tackles "Pay No Mind" from Mellow Gold while Beck takes on "Green Light" from Evol. This is what 7" is all about! The Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth split features demo versions of songs from their upcoming albums which are pretty good and still possess the cool factor with such a limited quantity out there!

The Gaslight Anthem
Live At Park Ave. 10"
SideOneDummy Records [2009]
(Limited One Time Press)

Why is it Cool: Live At Park Ave. features 6 songs that The Gaslight Anthem rarely plays live ("Film Noir", "Miles Davis & the Cool", "Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts", "The Navesink Banks", "Here's Looking at You, Kid" and a cover of "On
ce Upon a Time", originally written by Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise). The recording shows why The Gaslight Anthem are one of the best live bands on the road today.

The Breeders
Fate To Fatal 12" EP
Self-Released [2009]
Hand Screened Artwork by the Band
(1000 Copies)

Why is it Cool: Sure, you can now get this EP digitally but these individually hand screened and hand numbered 12" versions are the bomb. One of the more limited releases out there and a solid set of new tracks from The Breeders. The album includes a vocal track featuring Mark Lanegan and the Bob Marley cover "Chances Are" recorded with Steve Albini.

Iron & Wine
Norfolk 6/20/05 (CD)
Sub Pop Records [2009]
(5000 Copies)

Why is it Cool: Sam Beam is such a smooth artist and sounds perfect in concert. This 18 track disc was recorded during the Woman King tour and features his full band. It also has some fun artwork in spirit of the day because it looks like the other Sub Pop RSD vinyl releases.

Obits / Vetiver / Blitzen Trapper / Flight Of Concords
7" Singles
Sub Pop Records [2009]
(1500 Copies each/3000 Concords)

Why is it Cool: These are way neater then you might first think. Not only are they extremely limited but the vinyl are all blended colors versus that boring black. Oh yeah, the bands and tracks are pretty good too - a nice representation of the current Sub Pop roster.

Bob Dylan & Bruce Springsteen
Dreaming From You 7″ (Bob)
What Love Can Do” 7″ (Bruce)
Columbia Records [2009]
(2500 Copies Each)

Why is it Cool: Major label Columbia Records got into the fun with these two releases. The songs are nothing to get crazy about but anything by Dylan & Springsteen in such a limited package is worth the price of admission. (Note - We can't get Aidan to open his Bruce because he claims it is going to be huge on ebay years from now).

My Morning Jacket
Celebracion de la Ciudad Natal 2×10″/CD
ATO Records
(Limited Vinyl Release)

Why is it Cool: Its My Morning Jacket - that's why. This live EP that runs 46 minutes is a nice set and tells us what we already know - MMJ is a great live band. The seven tracks were recorded in 2008 at Louisville's Ear-X-Tacy and Waterfront Park. The vinyl version is the one to find because of its heavy 180g quality and the fact you get a CD with it.

Jesus Lizard -
Inch 7″ 9 Singles Set
Touch & Go Records [2009]
(2000 Copies)

Why is it Cool: These 7" singles were all remastered in 2009 by Bob Weston, and are only available in this limited edition singles pack. This will give you new appreciation for the Lizard as well as get you ready when Touch & Go reissues their albums later this year. This release is also worthy because the sets are individually numbered.

The Decemberists
The Rake Song 7"
Capitol Records [2009]
(2000 Copies)

Why is it Cool: The Decemberists have already embraced the vinyl revolution with their earlier releases and The Rake Song 7" gives you the solid unreleased track "East India Lanes".

Guided By Voices
Hold On Hope EP 12"
TVT Records [2009]
(Limited Vinyl Release w/ 3 Bonus Tracks)

Why is it Cool: The kings of high priced vinyl offer up the Hold On Hope EP on 12" for the first time with three extra tracks. You really would not think anything else by GBV could be buried but you get "Surgical Focus" (different mix), "Sucker Of Pistol City" (unreleased) and "Picture Me Big Time" (demo version).

Magnolia Electric Co.
It's Made Me Cry 7"
Secretly Canadian [2009]
(Limited Vinyl Release)

Why is it Cool: It's been six years since Jason Molina has released a 7-inch and It's Made Me Cry is a very solid and concise effort that was conceived, written, recorded and mixed over a series of five days in Bloomington, Indiana. Magnolia Electric Co. puts the sincere back into special releases.

There were some other stellar offerings on RSD that we missed out on or couldn't grab fast enough but that was part of the joy of physically shopping the bins. Can't wait till RSD 2010 - here is hoping you can't either!

Art Brut: Art Brut Vs. Satan

Art Brut
Art Brut Vs. Satan
Downtown Music [2009]

Fire Note Says:
Still bringin' the catchy rhymes!

Album Review:
It is a good day when I can proudly put on a new record from Brit Eddie Argos and his crew fondly called Art Brut. Their style of music is completely unique and hard to categorize because even though you know they hail from the UK - the music does not fall into a Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Cheifs or Coldplay category. On album number three Art Brut Vs. Satan the group grabs their dream producer and idol Frank Black (Pixies) to guide this wildly energetic bunch through another batch of punky, jangly, and wordplayin' jams. Although I was fond of the groups sophomore effort It's A Bit Complicated [2007], the record still had some flaws when it came to being too mature and at times overproduced. Art Brut Vs. Satan fixes those issues as the recording process was wrapped in two weeks and goes for the raw synergy of the group instead of ensuring catchy melodies. This put the edge back into Art Brut and it doesn't matter if they are singing about drinking it up in "Alcoholics Unanimous", debating liking The Stones or The Beatles on "What A Rush" or the story Argos leaves you with in the stunning seven minute closer "Mysterious Bruises", where he tries to remember what happened to him the night before - let's just say he "fought the floor and the floor won"! Art Brut Vs. Satan has all of the elements that made the bands debut Bang Bang Rock & Roll [2005] so special, while infusing some Pixie like guitars to ultimately bring the Art Brut we love to full form!
