Dirk Darmstaedter: Dirk Sings Dylan

Dirk Darmstaedter
Dirk Sings Dylan
Tapete Records [2010]

Fire Drill Review:
I am not sure the world needs an album of Dylan covers but this release from German artist Dirk Darmstaedter is a solid collection of ten tracks, that not only pays great homage to Bob but is a rewarding listen. Dirk Sings Dylan was developed out of a true love for the artist as Darmstaedter grew up in New Jersey with Bob Dylan music wafting it's way up the stairs from his dads stereo. The music stuck with him and this record is a true labor of love. Dirk Sings Dylan should be taken for what it is - a cover record from an artist you have never heard about (unless you are from Germany, as this is his 13th release). What I really liked about the album is that Darmstaedter really does adore Dylan and his covers never try to hard or fall short because his sincerity is 110%. This record easily could have been a waste of time but the reality is - Dirk can sing, you know the songs are already good, and it is always great to find a new artist!

Key Track: "Mr. Tambourine Man"

Band With Similar Fire: Glen Hansard
