Fire Note Says: Another superb record to kick off 2010!
Album Review:
Something about West Palm Beach doesn't scream indie guitar rock but that is exactly what you get on the debut from Surfer Blood. This record is an energized lesson in how it really doesn't take any tricks to make a stellar album. What it takes is solid straightforward instruments, catchy lyrics with memorable hooks and a lead singer that can take command. Surfer Blood has all of the above and somehow pull off not only combining these elements but also include some reverb, West African rhythms, a scorching mid album instrumental, short songs, long songs and even simple acoustics. What seems like everything including the kitchen sink is true but it doesn't actually sink in immediately, because Astro Coast is that good and flows seamlessly. It is a record that will make your foot tap, head sway and most certainly hum along. It is also a record that is admirable because Surfer Blood doesn't use many gimmicks or odd instruments to arrive at this solid end product. The guitar is on the front burner, the songs are interesting catchy and Astro Coast is a record that will have you going back for more Surfer Blood instantly!
