The HotRats: Turn Ons

The HotRats
Turn Ons
Fat Possum Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: No real surprises!

Album Review:
The HotRats are founding Supergrass members Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey and Turn Ons is a cover record where they tackle everything from Floyd to the Kinks, to Bowie, Costello and even the Beastie Boys. It is not that their takes are all that bad but the truth is - they are not all that interesting either. That is the real quagmire when putting out a covers record - how do you bring something unique to twelve tracks? Most groups succeed with one song or maybe two and I will give that to the HotRats as I really enjoyed their psychedelic version of the Beastie Boys "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" and the nicely played low key take on Squeeze's "Up The Junction". Most of the other tracks won't surprise you that they made the list and offer a more straightforward approach. Overall, The HotRats will still appeal to Supergrass fans and with Nigel Godrich on board producing, Turn Ons still has a good vibe but once you spin through it one time, there is not much to bring you back for more.

Key Tracks: "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)", "Damaged Goods", "Up The Junction"
