Fire Drill Review:
The Courage Of Others heads in a more low key direction then Midlake's previous outings and focuses in on the group's folk undertones, while having an overall organic presentation. Unfortunately, the band put aside things that made their last record The Trials Of Van Occupanther [2006] so interesting, such as the swirling synthesizers. This earthy approach works well on some tracks as Tim Smith and the band can harmonize perfectly and can make memorable moments out of one line. The only issue is that overall there are no real surprises and The Courage Of Others falls short of its high expectations because Midlake is a talented band -they just need to shake it up a bit more.
