Fire Drill Review:
From the cover alone you might think you are in for a post-punk band, that was inspired by no-wave and new wave, while offering up free-form noise experiments. If you think that, then you would be absolutely right about Venus Bogardus. The former UK band (now located in New Mexico) is named after a femme fatale character in the 1962 lesbian pulp fiction classic, Beebo Brinker and presents a solid driving guitar undertone that is completely fractured in places. The songs take shape as James Reich duels vocals with bass player Hannah Levbarg, which leads the listener right where they want them, as each song has precise angular changes and complementary reverb. What makes Venus Bogardus unique is that not many bands can come close to the style and vibe of a Sonic Youth or Velvet Underground but Spitting At The Glass takes a shot that is worth checking out!
