Butch Walker And The Black Widows: I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart

Butch Walker And The Black Widows
I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart
One Haven Music [2010]

Fire Drill Review:
More these days people know Butch Walker as the producer for such acts like Weezer, Pink, Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne but they probably don't remember his lengthy solo catalog or the hit rock single "Freak Of The Week" with his earlier band Marvelous 3. It is Butch Walker the artist that makes this release so intriguing, as he not only knows how to write a tune but comes off here closer to his influences like T. Rex, Gram Parsons or the 70's pop of ELO. This record also has a group vibe as I Liked It... was recorded quickly and collaboratively with his band The Black Widows. This combination turns in a very free willed and unrestricted album that comes at you with several different styles, while still maintaining solid transitions. Butch Walker will continue to be a heavily sought out producer and if you give I Liked It... a spin you will quickly find out why!

Key Track: "Trash Day"

Band With Similar Fire: Brendan Benson
