Freelance Whales: Weathervanes

Fire Note Says: Maybe not worth all of the early hype but still not a bad debut!

Album Review:
The Freelance Whales are one of the first big hyped bands in 2010 and after taking their debut Weathervanes for a spin you will know why. The album can be extremely catchy at moments with its sort of sunny indie approach that incorporates a very Death Cab meets Band Of Horses sound, which should be enough to sell some records. The layered vocals and hush sincerity of lead singer Judah Dadone are what Weathervanes balances itself on with the inclusion of instruments galore, from the obvious guitar to the more obscure harmonium. Individually the songs work well for the Freelance Whales but the record suffers a bit from consistency and difficult song transitions. Many of the tracks start to bleed together and the situation is not helped by the several instrumental interludes that pop up throughout the 45 minute record. Overall, the Freelance Whales may not live up to the early hype but show enough promise here on Weathervanes to keep an eye on them for future releases and enjoy some of their singles now.
