Fire Note Says: Different styles work well and sound great on The Celebrity Pilot's third long player.
Album Review:
Cleveland staple and longtime Robert Pollard keys man Chris Sheehan is back after a three year absence with his Celebrity Pilots third record Hawks Of The Lesser Antilles. The album once again grabs Todd Tobias (GBV, Robert Pollard, Circus Devils) to helm the boards and provides a solid 16 tracks of timeless rock. What makes The Celebrity Pilots such an intriguing listen is the vast amount of instrumentation that is thrown at you its 58 minute running time. The group not only relies on the standard guitar, bass and drums but also incorporates synths, cellos, trumpets, trombones, tube amps and tape and wire machines. All of this sound circles around Sheehan's catchy vocals and offers a multitude of styles throughout the record that can be upbeat, such as the synth driven opener "Serious Archers" or straight out rockers like "Penny Dreadful Can Float", while still mixing in several lo-fi slower tempo pieces and plenty of 60's Kinks like song structures. All of this culminates into one massive undertaking but gives back high returns after you give Hawks Of The Lesser Antilles repeat spins and makes you glad for The Celebrity Pilots return!
Key Tracks: "Penny Dreadful Can Float", "The Lie Of A Crucified Eye", "Hawks"
