Fire Note Says: This is just an easy listen.
Album Review:
Dr. Dog has a large underground following and always seems to be on the fringe of breaking out. On the Phili groups fourth studio album Shame, Shame there may not be much holding them back. The quintet twist an indie brand of Americana pop that on occasion shows off styles that are straight out of the Beach Boys and Beatles playbook. The band previously has been more about the live show then dedicating an extensive amount of time to their studio recordings and traditionally built their records in the undisturbed seclusion of their home studio. Shame, Shame breaks that pattern, as the group went into a professional studio with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) and the results are instant, as he certainly helped compress their jam band side into a group that relies on catchy hooks, memorable harmonies and a much bigger and cleaner sound. This bodes well for the group and Shame, Shame lets their spirited energy release song after song plus the band gets help from Jim James (My Morning Jacket) on several back up vocal duties, which all in turn should help put Dr. Dog out there to a bigger audience that for sure will like what they hear!
