Harlem: Hippies

Harlem
Hippies
Matador Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: These garage rockers will do just that - rock you!

Album Review:
Austin's Harlem play an uncomplicated form of lo-fi garage rock that is quickly addicting and outright just a good listen. Hippies is the groups sophomore record and it shows a focused mature progression on each of its 16 rocking tracks, as the song structures are tighter and the sound is cleaner. The band features shared songwriting and vocal duties by Michael Coomer and Curtis O'Mara. They also switch between guitar, vocals and drums on stage (and off) alongside newly-added bassist Jose Boyer. This one component of Harlem gives them just enough diversity on Hippies to make sure they don't wear out their welcome nor sound like a one trick pony. What makes Harlem so infectious is that they offer no gimmicks. They come off here as laid back and free to do whatever they want, while still making a quality fun record. These guys were raised on Nirvana and present a very Pixes meets The Kinks overall sound on Hippies that will keep your car windows down in the summer and your player happy for the rest of the year!
