Jakob Dylan: Women And Country

Jakob Dylan
Women And Country
Columbia Records [2010]

Fire Drill Review:
The pressure for Jakob Dylan must be unbearable. He always will be in the shadow of his famous father, he has been chasing and trying to recapture the early glory of The Wallflowers, and now on his sophomore solo record Women And Country, he puts forth his best effort to make the stars align. At some point, I do believe Jakob Dylan will have his day in the sun because he truly has a great voice and the path he travels on Women And Country is absolutely the right choice. Not only does he offer up eleven slices of Americana here but he recruits Neko Case and Kelly Hogan for backup vocals on eight of them. That easily would be enough but Dylan also has sound master T Bone Burnett producing, which automatically gives Women And Country the sonic listening experience you would expect. This is a record that takes more than one spin to absorb and it does have some strong tracks that showcase why Dylan is perfect for this genre and why we still care. Lyrically, Women And Country could be a bit stronger and not having Neko Case and Kelly Hogan step out front more or even in duet form, was a missed opportunity. I don't think Women And Country is Jakob Dylan's swan song by any means, so as he pushes forward Americana twang is where he needs to stay and his "big" solo breakout album could definitely still be a reality!

Key Track: "Holy Rollers For Love"

"swan song" means final work. i think you meant "magnum opus" -- greatest work.

sorry for being a jerk, though. pet peeve of mine, i guess :)

also the it's vs. its thing, but i'll let you work that out yourself.
