Circa Survive: Blue Sky Noise

Circa Survive
Blue Sky Noise
Atlantic Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: Sonic refinement is the key to this one!

Album Review:
When your favorite band moves to a major label like Circa Survive's shift to Atlantic records you will for sure hear the following about their new long player Blue Sky Noise: this is a sell out, too polished, too slick, too emo, not enough punk, not enough soul, voice too high, not enough rock and probably Atlantic Records ruined them. Now that we know those comments will be unfairly labeled to this release, it is time for a reality check. Circa Survive have done an excellent job of using Grammy-winning producer David Bottrill (Muse, Tool) to not only make their sound flawless on Blue Sky Noise but they also tone down their sometimes chaotic momentum to put out a well balanced emo-rock record that could be their best. Blue Sky Noise is an album that should appeal to the masses and probably is only one radio, movie or TV spot away from surging. Singer Anthony Green could have been a previous stopping point for some listeners as his high Geddy Lee style might hit a nerve but here, it is well refined and point blank - Green can sing. If fact he can wail and he accomplishes driving each track with its thumping skins and grinding guitar, while chiming in perfectly on the harmonies and soaring above the heavy points. Blue Sky Noise won't be for everyone and at times some of the tracks can have the same sonic trend but overall Circa Survive pull off the big rock sound here but retain an undertone of not having a big head and truly focused on their art. This equates to Blue Sky Noise being an enjoyable listen that offers both hard hitting guitar moments and emotional acoustic tones that play off each other with a density that will have you hitting play again.

Key Tracks: "Get Out", "I Felt Free", "Fever Dreams"
