Blitzen TrapperDestroyer Of The Void
Sub Pop Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: Blitzen Trapper's fifth album is a solid throwback salute to the 60's and 70's.
Album Review:
Right after the harmonized verse kicks things off 10 seconds into the lead off title track, you just know that Blitzen Trapper's fifth album Destroyer Of The Void has epic written all over it. It is an album that is a salute to the 60's folk movement and smooth country-fried rock of the 70's. Front man Eric Earley is a storyteller by nature and that talent shines through here on Destroyer, as each track grabs you with its lyrical tales that include a wandering tailor, a black-eyed lover and events on the road of life. This depth and vocal style gives Destroyer Of The Void its base, while the band surrounds Earley's falsetto with piano, guitar solos, shimmering cymbals and too many to count memorable harmonies and melodies. The other noticeable element that makes Destroyer unique are how its tracks switch tempo mid stream like the guitar assault in the final third of the six minute title track or the sprawling chorus in the middle of "Love And Hate" that just seems to appear. Overall, Destroyer Of The Void does not quite reach the highlights on Furr [2008] but it comes very close, as this record is much more of grower and if anyone could pay tribute to the past, while still sounding modern, indie and relevant - Blitzen Trapper is the band and this is the album!
