Fire Drill Review:
Here is the quick background on this release: Ryan Adams recorded a concept sci-fi metal album called Orion back in 2006 and just released it in a limited vinyl/digital only format. It is a very hard record to take seriously at first because instead of Adams's typical Americana style he revs up his voice into more of a Danzig type growl and the music itself has speed riffs much like early Metallica. Orion overall is not awful and in fact is very focused sticking to the sci-fi concept and has some exciting moments. The songs are all short metal explosions with most averaging around 2 minutes in length, as the entire record finishes in 28 minutes. Clearly most Ryan Adams fans will not be listening to this over and over but the collector's will want to get their hands on this limited clear 180g vinyl pressing and spectacular shiny silver jacket design by Michel Langevin from Voivod because it looks great. The entire package is one to remember and at the end of the day is a fun listen plus reminds us of why Ryan is always an artist to keep an eye on!
