Album Review:
Don't let the title fool you, as Alejandro Escovedo's new long player Street Songs Of Love picks up the fiery rock right where his excellent last record Real Animal [2008] stopped. The album finds Escovedo collaborating again with producer Tony Visconti (U2, Bowie, Morrissey) and chief songwriting partner Chuck Prophet, which both have a great impact on the quality of Street Songs Of Love. Clearly the theme here is "love" from the perspective of Escovedo, who has been through a lot of personal struggles over the last several years but it is not a downer or about the one that got away, but rather a soulful, celebratory and liberating vision of one of the greatest emotions we can experience. Street Songs Of Love also has some stellar guest vocalists helping out Escovedo, as he trades lines with Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) on "Down In The Bowery" and then the Boss Bruce Springsteen on the rocker "Faith". Both of these tracks are highlights and just add to the overall excitement contained in this record. With catchy and meaningful lines like "If your love was a ship, I'd pull your anchor and I'd hang onto it" combined with the all out rock assault of supporting band The Sensitive Boys, Street Songs Of Love is another solid notch in Escovedo's belt that finds him making some of the best music in his long and storied career!
