The Candles: Between The Sounds

The Candles
Between The Sounds
The End Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: The Candles come at you with a debut that is hard to put down!

Album Review:
My guess is that you have never heard the name Josh Lattanzi. He not only fronts The Candles but has recorded and toured with the likes of Ben Kweller, Juliana Hatfield, Albert Hammond, Jr., Tinted Windows and The Lemonheads. This experience along with Lattanzi's smooth vocal delivery makes for The Candles debut Between The Sounds a very entertaining and solid effort that contains many alt-pop gems that are stirred with a little twang. It is this mix of styles and stay in your head hooks that makes Between The Sounds so engaging. To no surprise, Lattanzi surrounded himself with excellent musicians to round out the band and grabbed James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) on "Anywhere Tonight" for a little help on keyboards and guitar. Most tracks have a very mid-tempo pace but each captures you individually with its story and sing along chorus. The album itself is a perfectly tight 10 songs that concludes under 35 minutes so The Candles know how to entertain you and don't overstay the welcome. This is a debut that might not instantly grab you but after several spins you start humming along track by track and realize that The Candles are exactly what you needed!

Key Tracks: "Here Or Gone", "Not Enough", "Who We Are"
