Fire Drill Review:
It seems anymore that home recordings have flooded the music scene and let's be honest - it doesn't take much nowadays to release a quality sounding track. What is missing from 95% of these ventures is the substance. Well Seattle’s Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, defies the odds and offers up his album Learning, that is a very intimate 30 minutes of listening that explores his dark experiences growing up such as abuse, addiction, and suicide. The record could be a complete downer but his outlook still always seems hopeful and his delivery is absolutely stellar. The record features mostly a hushed vocal from Hadreas (at times even barely audible) and a piano keeping his time, which just builds an atmosphere that commands your attention. It will be interesting where Perfume Genius goes from here but Learning is one of the most graceful and emotional records you will hear this year.
