Fire Drill Review:
Scissor Sisters' self-titled debut in 2004 felt like a onetime shot for a band that incorporated Elton John/Bee Gees like vocals with irresistible hooks and dance beats. Their second release suffered a bit from trying too hard to recapture the magic but on the group’s third record, Night Work, the band embraces their musical niche and exploits it in every way. Night Work is much darker than their previous records and where before the band really aimed for the charts, this go around, they go more direct with their lyrics telling tales of the modern gay lifestyle. This may turn some listeners off but I doubt Scissor Sisters care, as the focused subject matter shouldn't be much of a surprise. What works with the slightly darker material is Night Work's harder beats. Without the big anthems here, Scissor Sisters conjure up really tight pulsing driving songs, that will make your feet tap and most certainly will work on the dance floor. Night Work is definitely different from their earlier releases but it will be interesting to see if it represents a new direction for the future or simply just a more serious side of Scissor Sisters. Either way they go, Night Work is a change that just might define them as a career band.
