DREAMEND: So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite

DREAMEND
So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite
Graveface Records [2010]

Fire Note Says: This is not your typical indie folk record!

Album Review:
There is a good chance that the new long player from Dreamend may be the weirdest little indie folk record I review all year long. As the bassist/guitarist in the psych indie pop group Black Moth Super Rainbow, Ryan Graveface is familiar with pushing the limits of music but as the sole member here and owner of Graveface Records, he has full control of this record and offers a more unique accompaniment that includes banjo, bells, organ and guitar. It is a rather pleasant uptempo vibe that runs throughout So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite and the hooks really feel good on a breezy afternoon. The only catch here is that once you dive into the lyrics you realize that this album is about the mind and actions of a serial killer. The lyrics cover committing the gory crimes, hiding the bodies and cleaning up the blood of their hands. Not your typical subject matter for cruising down the road or hanging out on a lazy Sunday. This for me is where art and style collide in the middle as the music is superb, the topic is creepy and Dreamend is clearly unique. So I Ate Myself, Bite By Bite is probably not the album you are going to keep going back to but it is definitely a record to hear for yourself just to say you did!
