Fire Note Says: Get ready to shake it on the excellent sophomore full length from Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears!
Album Review:
I completely wore out my copy of Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears debut record back in 2009, so my anticipation and excitement was quite high as I cracked open their sophomore effort Scandalous. The record absolutely does not disappoint, as Black Joe Lewis once again shows that he is an expert at mixing classic soul with the attitude of a Detroit garage rocker. When you toss in the horn section, background singers, excellent musicians and the confident cocky attitude - you automatically achieve a
Scandalous record that will make your day. Right from the kick off blaring horns and guitar riff in opening track "Livin' In The Jungle" you know that this ride with Black Joe Lewis is going to be funk filled to the brim. The next track, "I'm Gonna Leave You", is a sweltering blues track that lays down a groove that you can't get out of your head and gives you the other more controlled side of The Honeybears. Of course that is the back n' forth balance that Scandalous plays as "Booty City" sounds like you might think and is a rockin' highlight that showcases Lewis' power vocals, the bands musical tightness and a call out chorus that will keep you coming back for more. That explosion of sound is only the beginning, as it happens in the first three tracks. The rest of Scandalous follows suit and delivers, while Spoon drummer Jim Eno once again produces keeping things even more raw and on point. Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears posses the perfect flare of classic meets progressive as Scandalous is timeless fun for everyone that tunes in!Key Tracks: "Booty City", "She's So Scandalous", "I'm Gonna Leave You"
