Fire Note Says: X co-founder, Exene Cervenka releases another solid folk record that once again highlights her strong songwriting.

Album Review:
Exene Cervenka is best known as a lead member and co-founder of the legendary Los Angeles punk band, X. The Excitement Of Maybe is her second solo album for Bloodshot Records and once again travels the singer/songwriter down the blended folk/country path. The album is solid from start to finish, as Cervenka's distinct vocals progress each track along with ease. "I Wish It Would Stop Raining" actually would sound like a X song if the steel pedal was replaced with guitar but it highlights how musically Cervenka has not moved that far from her core, even though the instruments have changed. This folk setting works for Cervenka as you can hear her comfort level coming through the speakers. She also surrounds herself with competent musicians such as Dave Alvin (The Blasters) on electric guitar, jazz bassist Christian McBride (Chick Corea, Sting), and upstart talent - Maggie Bjorklund. Fans that have followed Cervenka over the years should be pleased with The Excitement Of Maybe because you still get her strong songwriting and passion that she puts into every record she has released. The Excitement Of Maybe is not going to "wow" the folk die-hards but for the large public radio crowd out there, Cervenka's blended output is strong and definitely worth checking out when you get the chance.
