Bill Callahan: Apocalypse

Bill Callahan
Apocalypse
Drag City Records [2011]

Fire Note Says: Another stellar performance from singer/songwriter Bill Callahan!

Album Review:
Bill Callahan is a talent that is hard describe because on the surface his music seems so simple but the person here actually makes everything he records sound so much more complex. Callahan's extremely confident swagger consistently comes out around every corner and on Apocalypse this is no different. He pulls the listener in here with his low voice and interesting tales of American myths while he asks questions with no immediate solutions. Apocalypse is not quite as engaging as the excellent Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle [2009] but it comes close, even though it is completely different. It is a much more laid back affair and is more reminiscent of Callahan's earlier Smog material. Apocalypse features 7 songs playing out over 40 minutes, which gives the listener plenty of time to absorb and engage with every track. This is a record that you expect Callahan to make, as it may not be an album you go back to consistently but when you do, you just nod your head and admire its superb songwriting, execution and timeless creation. It is just another badge on Callahan's sleeve, as he has placed himself into the upper echelon of his peers and does not seem to be going anywhere soon- which for us fans, that is a great thing, as I am sure more quality albums are to follow!
