Fire Note Says: The Seedy Seeds release another smart, wistful and folktronic rocking record!
Album Review:
What I have always liked about Cincinnati's Seedy Seeds is their unique blending combination of electronic beats with banjo, strings and the warmest vocal harmonies this side of the Ohio River. The trio's third record, Verb Noun, continues this same mix but with much more precision and focus. It is not that the quality here on Verb Noun outperforms their earlier catalog but the growth you can hear within the tracks from the band, solidifies this record as another stellar
addition to their already great catalog. Most of this progression can easily be explained through experience, as on their debut Change States [2007], Margaret Darling and Mike Ingram were still learning how to play new instruments and developing their sound. Fast forward to the permanent addition of drummer Brian Penick to the core and The Seedy Seeds now know exactly what they want to do, how to do it and have a perfect execution. This paves the wave for some great highlights, like on the excellent self-titled track that incorporates the best of everything the Seeds have to offer and yields one of their best songs to date. This confidence also allows The Seedy Seeds to experiment, like on the more bluegrass driven "Flooded" that shifts to an upbeat gear several times throughout the track and keeps you guessing, while the closing song "Flintlock Fire" is absent of electronics and is a perfect slice of harmonized Americana. The Seedy Seeds also have the ability to turn on the fun charm exampled on the simple but catchy "I Am The Conductor", while the mid-tempo "Ethel" possess a building instrument intensity that was totally unheard of from the band before. All of these "moments" once again puts The Seedy Seeds in the upper echelon of releases so far this year as Verb Noun instantly grabs you and just gets more infectious with every chance you give it!Key Tracks: "Verb Noun", "Coyote Song", "Tired Enough To Drive"
