Thursday: No Devolución

Thursday
No Devolución
Epitaph Records [2011]

Fire Note Says: Thursday rage back with a progressive sound that is current, likable and most importantly - rocks out!

Album Review:
I don't think anyone ever said it was easy being on top. Thursday will always be a band named and credited for mainstreaming emo and post-hardcore but along with that they are also a band which has weathered the storm and on their sixth album No Devolución - survived. With emo finding its place along side the ska and electronica movements before it, bands like Thursday have not enjoyed much praise or press in the last several years. What makes Thursday special in all this, is that the once pioneers have found a progressive way to evolve here and have made a completely current album that is still emotionally charged but taken to another level with its atmospheric musical undertones. This surging momentum that Thursday's songs now possess, make every one of them presented here more like an event then just a track number. Singer Geoff Rickly still delivers a strong vocal but now No Devolución separates itself out from their previous records because now the band functions as one unit. There is no sense of urgency here, which for Thursday that is a good thing, because each track has the opportunity to sink in, like the sprawling "Sparks Against The Sun" or the catchy "No Answers". With that said, do not think Thursday have given up their aggression entirely, as "Open Quotes" is a throat throttler that puts the pedal to the floor and reminds you of their post-hardcore upbringing, while "Turnpike Divides" combines all of their old and new strengths for one passionate rocking ride. Long time fans should embrace No Devolución, as it not only highlights where Thursday have come from but all of the elements that fans liked before help build this record into the killer epic undertaking that it is. Thursday have successfully yielded a rock album that sounds completely fresh, strikes a solid balance between new and old styles and finds the band at the top of their game!
