Fire Note Says: Vivian Girls expand their approach on third LP Share The Joy that yields excellent results!
Album Review:
Right from the 6 minute plus opening track "The Other Girls", you get a sense that the third record from the Vivian Girls is going to be different. It is not only the longest song they have released but it also has the first line proclaiming that "I don't wanna be like the other girls" as the song's mid tempo drone vibe instantly gives you a fresh offering from the female trio. The second
track, "I Heard You Say" is a more back to the basics Vivian Girls song with a high intensity, lo-fi fuzz and a harmonizing hook that sticks with you. The interesting thing about Share The Joy is that 2010 saw a numerous amount of bands releasing a very Vivian Girls type template of a record. Some were good, some were crap but most overall still received more attention then the Vivian Girls earlier releases, so it is nice to see the band return in full form and show the rookies how it is done. The sassy attitude in the vigorous "Trying To Pretend" is completely memorable, while some of the spoken interjections on "Take Is As It Comes" and "Death" work well and represents a superb shout out to The Shangri-Las classic sound. What I really like about Share The Joy is that the band takes chances and just does not retread their past. This especially happens on the album's other 6 minute track and closer "Light In Your Eyes", as the Vivian Girls are now completely comfortable letting their instruments do the talking and send this rocker storming out the door and shutting the book on Share The Joy but totally forcing you to come back and check it out again!Key Tracks: "I Heard You Say", "Trying To Pretend", "Light In Your Eyes"
