The Elected: Bury Me In My Rings

The Elected
Bury Me In My Rings
Vagrant Records [2011]

Fire Note Says: The Elected return after 5 years with a solid and warm record that is a true grower.

Album Review:
I don't think anyone has ever discounted the important role Blake Sennett played in Rilo Kiley but the guitarist clearly always was overshadowed by lead singer Jenny Lewis so it is nice to see a third record from his band The Elected which lets him take the spotlight. It has been five years since Sun, Sun, Sun [1996] was released and on Bury Me In My Rings, The Elected have dropped most of the twang from their background and have thrusted ahead into a warm 70's rock vibe that totally fits. The record features mid-tempo sprawling song structures that are supported by sharp harmonies and plenty of guitar. The pace of Bury Me In My Rings is a strong stroll which benefits the record, as it lets Sennett's songwriting shine loud and bright. Overall there may not be a breakout success to the masses here with this record but all of the 12 tracks are true growers. It takes several spins to really get into Bury Me In My Rings because of its subtle grooves but that is exactly when you realize how these tracks are breezy, fun, memorable, lasting and timeless. The Elected have created a new chapter in their career that feels fresh and that I can only see expanding if they stay headed in this direction and keep giving this once side project the full attention!

Key Tracks: "Born To Love You", "Look At Me Now", "See The Light"
