Fire Note Says: Cults debut lives up to the hype!

Album Review:
Anymore it seems that you don't see that many bands making their debut on a major label like Columbia Records but that is exactly what the San Diego group Cults did after their "Go Outside" single went viral late last year. No big surprise that the track is on their debut front and center but if anyone wondered if the Cults were a one-hit surprise their self-titled debut completely puts that thought to rest. The entire record is a fresh and modern take on a sixties pop stage with the spirited female vocals of Madeline Follin leading the charge. Her youthful pitch combined with guitars, synthesizers, some reverb and several background samples give Cults a depth that other bands of this nature have sometimes failed to achieve. The girl group doo-wop undertone on the strolling "You Know What I Mean" is a great example of every piece working together as it erupts out of its 60's vibe into a sprawling chorus that is instantly memorable and very 2011. The other tracks on the album burst out in the same type of fashion and with a running time of 33 minutes, Cults never wears out its welcome. Cults should find an audience with this record and it is nice to hear a band with hype not only fulfilling expectations but easily exceeding them on their solid debut!
