Sebadoh: Bakesale [Deluxe Edition]

Fire Note Says: A modern must for your collection from Sebadoh!

Album Review:
"There is history in this place" is the first line of "Skull" and it couldn't be more accurate when recalling the superb indie, "now classic", 1994 record Bakesale from Sebadoh. The album was the band's fifth full-length but easily is its most accessible and represented a new found energy within the band. Up until this point, Sebadoh were more known for lo-fi superiority but Bakesale fits along nicely with Lou Barlow's Dinosaur Jr. catalog and helped drive the entire alternative indie music movement. It is arguably one of Sebadoh's best records, although I know that III [1991] would probably get more votes, and the remastering here highlights the little things in the album you may have missed the first time around. The deluxe edition includes a second disc of b-sides, EP tracks and rarities all from the Bakesale era, which truly makes it a great addition for fans. Some of the highlights off the second disc are the acoustic songs but what really adds value here are some of the more experimental tracks. Bakesale always gets credit for being so straightforward but after listening through the bonus material you realize that there was plenty of experimental things going on during the recording process. It just so happens that these cuts didn't make the record but after checking out the spacey jam "Hank Williams" you know that Barlow, Loewenstein and Fay were extremely creative at this point in their career and never were afraid to try something new. This energy and confidence is what made Sebadoh a great band and these attributes propelled Bakesale to the great album that it still is today!
