Taking Back Sunday: Taking Back Sunday

Fire Note Says: Original members make a honest effort to rekindle their debut magic!

Album Review:
In many ways this self-titled fifth album from Taking Back Sunday could really be categorized as their legitimate sophomore follow up, as this record features the original lineup that created their now classic debut Tell All Your Friends [2002]. Of course, that was still nine years ago and everyone now is much older and wiser but right from the opening punch of "El Paso" you can hear the post-hardcore group finding their legs again. Some longtime fans will be disappointed because this album is definitely not Tell All Your Friends but it also is not a throwaway. There are plenty of soaring memorable layered choruses like in "This Is All Now" and "Faith (When I Let You Down)" but some songs suffer from lyrical content that just didn't work for me such as "Best Places To Be A Mom" and what I will label the orphan song "Sad Savior". Most tracks here have a high energy that is refreshing to hear as Taking Back Sunday seriously seem and sound happy to be back in this original capacity and even though it may not be a total return to early form, it is a step closer and who knows what more time together will cultivate for the next record - but this is a solid start!

Key Tracks: "El Paso", "This Is All Now", "You Got Me"
