Zomby: Dedication

Zomby
Dedication
4AD Records [2011]

Fire Note Says: Total grower from Zomby!

Album Review:
I know that dubstep is not for everyone but the tight electronic compositions that English producer Zomby creates on Dedication can turn anyone into a fan, as its tracks are haunting, invigorating and energizing. The record keeps a mostly electronic instrumental groove but one outside the dubstep box is the collaboration on "Things Fall Apart" with Panda Bear that is excellent and solidifies how this genre fits in with the indie crowd. Other tracks, like the pulsing "Digital Rain" have the listener sitting on the edge of their headphones while "A Devil Lay Here" is truly sinister as its subtle attack plays with your conscious. The beauty of this record is that Zomby gives you 16 tracks in just over 35 minutes, so the record moves along quickly, takes you to different places, and then before you know it drops you back off. Basically if you sill don't quite get it, I simplify Dedication as if Radiohead went mute - Zomby is what you have left in all its glorious intricate beats, bass and stylistic piano. Dedication is a hard record to pick up but just as hard to put down!
