Various ArtistsSPIN Presents Newermind: A Tribute Album
SPIN [2011]

Fire Note Says: I can't believe it has been 20 years since Nirvana's Nevermind!
Album Review:
Not sure if you have ever checked out SPIN Magazines compilation tribute records before but in honor of its 20th anniversary, Nirvana's Nevermind is presented by some of their favorite contemporary artists, as they cover the influential album's 13 songs, in their original order. This is a free download to all, which makes it an easy record to digest but the surprising thing is that the tribute is really good. The bigger names here, and always dear to Nirvana's heart, are the Meat Puppets respectfully taking on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and The Vaselines covering "Lithium". Both tracks are great but its the artists that you may not know as well that really make this compilation shine, as the soul filled Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band turn "Stay Away" into a groove filled ride, while Amanda Palmer transforms "Polly" into a very cool and creepy quiet folk song and Jessica Lea Mayfield gives "Lounge Act" her sultry draw that requires you to hit repeat. There are also a couple of rock stand outs here as Surfer Blood conquers "Territorial Pissings" in full rock fashion and "Breed" finds Titus Andronicus ripping through it with 100% desperation and passion. Every artist that is on here makes a very faithful attempt to proudly cover their track and even though it is not a record you will be spinning all the time, it is definitely worth checking out - especially because it is free. Way to go SPIN for giving something unique that in the spirit of tribute records plays well!
