Fire Note Says: Yellow Ostrich find a home with Barsuk Records and get their debut, The Mistress, remastered & reissued!
Album Review:
It is always nice to see a good album find a bigger home so that more people can enjoy it and that is exactly what Barsuk Records have done with Yellow Ostrich, as their debut The Mistress was self-released digitally on Bandcamp late last year. Now in its physical form, The Mistress was
partially re-recorded and fully remastered with 2 additional tracks and an alternate version of "Mary". The album takes a little different approach, as Yellow Ostrich utilize the vocals of Alex Schaaf as one of their main instruments. His voice is soft but yet commands attention as the group manipulates his highs and lows while even layering it to create rhythms within the tracks. Yellow Ostrich build simple song structures around their vocal manipulation that engages the listener to the level of being able to chill out by the pool, as "Mary" sways back n forth delicately and then you can rock out a bit with "WHALE", that keeps you foot tapping while the song builds a quiet intensity as it starts to really kicks in with the Jack White type squelch vocal near its conclusion. Yellow Ostrich definitely are onto a unique sound with The Mistress that gets better after every spin and certainly should be a find for anyone on the indie scene looking for something fresh - if they didn't already find it last year!Key Tracks: "WHALE", "Mary", "Hold On"
