Mike Doughty: Yes And Also Yes

Mike Doughty
Yes And Also Yes
Snack Bar Records [2011]

Fire Note Says: Mike Doughty returns free and creative as ever.

Album Review:
Yes And Also Yes represents Mike Doughty's first solo record on his own Snack Bar label after leaving the Dave Matthews' owned ATO for more control of his music. The record offers what Doughty has always done best, since his Soul Coughing days, which is give you plenty of foot tappers that have a rhythmic flow driven by his catchy wordplay. Yes And Also Yes contains plenty of new avenues for Doughty, as he performs "Holiday (What Do You Want?)" with Rosanne Cash, sings "Makelloser Mann" all in German and includes "Into The Un", which was a track about goth kids on LSD in a train station that was written for the Twilight soundtrack but rejected. The album contains plenty of Doughty charm, which helps it succeed as a whole but at times the record still feels a bit unfinished as 4 of the 14 tracks don't even make the 2 minute mark. This would be fine but most of the time it seems that Doughty is onto something and then the track just ends. This is the internal battle on Yes And Also Yes, as Doughty is at the top of his game on the completely developed tracks but when he experiments, the album struggles. It is nice to see Mike in a musical rejuvenated mood, as I am sure this is the only first of many releases we can expect now that he is running his own ship and that alone is a reason to check out his latest release!
