Album Review:
The Dum Dum Girls are in the upper echelon of female groups that have brought forth a retro-pop sound with an edgy fuzz over the last couple years. Only In Dreams quickly follows their debut full length released last year and an EP that just came out early this year. What I like about the quick turn around is that the Dum Dum Girls do not give you more of the same but instead have moved this genre forward with a rec
ord that is more focused on lyrics, production and most of all, front woman Dee Dee. The record's content was developed from the loss of Dee Dee's mother and time away from her husband. This subject matter automatically gives Only In Dreams depth and maturity, as you can hear the seriousness behind the tracks. The production is now big time, as the songs sparkle and glisten compared to the debut, while the biggest impact here is allowing Dee Dee to shine vocally. She has a giant range, which was somewhat stifled on their debut but on Only In Dreams her voice is front and center. She delivers on each and every track with her Chrissie Hynde style and this is highlighted on the slow swaying over six minute, "Coming Down" that is simply excellent. This also offers a new side of the Dum Dum Girls and is the progression that some other bands in this genre should pay attention too. On Only In Dreams, the Dum Dum Girls don't exceed the excitement found on their debut but come close, as the band grows substantially and proves that they have so much more to give - can't wait to see where they go next!Key Tracks: "Always Looking", "Bedroom Eyes", "Coming Down"
