Henry's Funeral Shoe: Donkey Jacket

Fire Note Says: Henry's Funeral Shoe bring you a catchy rocking southern blues from South Wales!

Album Review:
The grinding southern blues riff on the opening 5 minute track, "Be Your Own Invention", would never have you guessing that it was created by two Welsh brothers but that is exactly the case, as Henry's Funeral Shoe is comprised of singer/guitarist Aled Clifford and brother drummer Brennig from Ystrad Mynach, South Wales. The duo return with their sophomore record, Donkey Jacket, that is filled with some of the loudest soulful rock'n'roll to come out the UK in a long time and complete with a wailing harmonica, tracks like "Anvil & Chains" get in your face. On "Dog Scratched Ear", Henry's Funeral Shoe light the song on fire with shredding guitar and pulsing drums, as Aled's vocal goes from 1 to 10 in seconds. Most of Donkey Jacket keeps this same blues rock punk vibe thriving at different tempos. It is not till the more Americana song "Heart On Fire" and the closing track, "Across The Sky", that you realize that Henry's Funeral Shoe have a few more tricks in the bag, as the later is a piano driven ballad that is played right out of the Beatles songbook. Donkey Jacket is a solid almost 40 minute rock ride that any fan of the Black Keys or White Stripes should enjoy, as Henry's Funeral Shoe aim to impress - and guess what? - They do!
